New seven ministers are expected to take oath on Wednesday as part of the new additions to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s cabinet. The move was made just a day before the beginning of the Budget session and is seen as a vital move to increase the government’s numeraries ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, which are scheduled to be held in October-November 2025.

As of now, the sources claim that the cabinet expansion was held back due to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Pragati Yatra and the NDA’s Unity Show. A senior BJP leader said that the process was expected to happen right after the Khadmas period, an unholy period in the Hindu calendar, after Tila Sankranti on January 14.

This will be the second cabinet expansion during Nitish Kumar’s current term. The first one took place in March 2024, right before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, when 21 ministers were inducted, taking the size of the cabinet to 30 from 9. Nitish Kumar was sworn in as the chief minister of Bihar for the ninth time on January 28, 2024, after parting ways with the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) and rejoining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Bihar’s cabinet presently consists of 30 ministers, but it can only have 36. After the resignation of the Land and Revenue Minister Dilip Jaiswal, there have been seven vacancies. It is expected that most of these posts will be filled by the BJP in order to increase its presence in the state during the vital election year.
