Security forces reported Saturday that nine militants from different proscribed outfits were arrested in a major crackdown on insurgency in Imphal East and Thoubal districts. This is among an ongoing drive to stop militant activities such as extortion, kidnapping, and smuggling of arms in Manipur.

Four active members of the Kangleipak Communist Party (Noyon) are arrested on Friday by police in Chingdompok, Thoubal district. Officials said these people were involved in kidnapping and extortion. Intelligence inputs were received on the suspects, and security forces acted on them; the suspects were apprehended without any resistance.

On the same day, four more active members of KCP (PWG) were arrested from the Khabeisoi area in the Imphal East district. The businesses that were allegedly extorted by these individuals included local businesses and residents.

Police also arrested one of the active members of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF-Pambei) from Nungoi Awang Leikai in Imphal East district. Authorities have disclosed that this militant was engaged in extortion activity and was responsible for transporting arms and ammunition within and around Imphal city. While operating, security personnel find a .32 pistol in his possession.

Security forces, however, raided another location in the Hiyanglam Natekhong Thongjin area of the Kakching district on Friday. A lot of weapons were recovered, including two single-barreled guns, a modified sniper rifle with scopes, a country-made pistol, 5 hand grenades, 4 IEDs, live INSAS rifle rounds, 1 9mm pistol, 2 handsets and a China-made drone from the river bank.

The operations signal a vital move to keep Manipur stable and secure and also signal resurgent attempts by authorities to break down the insurgent networks in the state.
