Satara: Family members of a 29-year-old government doctor in a government district of Satara, Maharashtra, are demanding that capital punishment be given to two men identified in her suicide note, including a police officer. Thursday, the young physician who was appointed in a sub-district hospital located in Phaltan town was found hanging in a hotel room, as the community and her family were left shocked.
Police reports indicate that the doctor had written a note on her palm accusing a police sub-inspector (PSI) who raped her and a software engineer who exposing her to mental harassment. The woman was the first one to serve in the service of Phaltan, where she died, though she was a native of Wadvani taluka, Beed district.
The young doctor had repeatedly complained about harassment, but her complaints were not heeded, as alleged by family members. According to one of the relatives, the doctor was pressured to manipulate medical reports at the hospital because of political interference. The political individuals in Phaltan would request her to alter medical reports since she was on autopsy duty frequently. The relative alleged that on several occasions, she had complained about the PSI, but her complaints were not investigated. Another relative pointed out that a doctor was tortured by a medical officer by assigning her autopsy work to her several times, further contributing to her misery.
One of their relatives and a doctor shared his story about the suicide and visiting a hospital where the body was taken. “As a physician, I would not allow myself to miss the autopsy. That was the time I saw the suicide note on her palm and recommended that the forensic specialists should be involved in the process,” the relative said.
The family has insisted that just arrest of the accused is not enough.
