Tonk: Clashes broke out in Rajasthan’s Tonk district in the Deoli-Uniara assembly constituency after Independent candidate Naresh Meena had a scuffle with sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Amit Chaudhary in a polling booth in Samravata.
Police said that the clash started when Meena accosted and allegedly slapped SDM Chaudhary on Wednesday, reducing a face-off situation into a war.
Polling agents and well-wishers of the independent candidate Naresh Meena stone-pelting the police that had come to arrest him created a scene for the whole night. As quoted by the Ajmer range inspector-general of police Om Prakash, the people soon turned violent to the extent of stone pelting, damaging property and setting vehicles ablaze.
As to the two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles, it was reported that over two dozen two-wheelers, besides about eight four-wheelers, including police vehicles, were either burnt or seriously vandalised. Police officials said that the situation could only have been tamed after the reinforcement of the security forces in the district.
Police charged 60 people who were thought to be involved in the act after police regained a certain measure of authority. “There was Communal tension in Samravata village last night when fights started when policemen tried to arrest Naresh Meena,” said Inspector-General Om Prakash. “People were involved in stone-throwing, and there were cases of fire incidence in which some vehicles were burnt.”
When speaking about the ongoing work to evaluate the losses, the additional superintendent of police (SP) of Tonk, Brijendra Singh Bhati, said the following. “We are in the process of assessing the damage occasioned by the violence and as well have arrested a couple of people. Police have already launched some efforts to identify and nab Naresh Meena to further investigate the circumstance.”
The bypolls in Rajasthan have become more sensitive because the candidates and their supporters have increased competition. It has thus added fresh credence to security dilemmas in policing elections with a view to ensuring order in the area. Police administration agents and officials are making efforts to prevent the situation from becoming worse and revive order in the troubled zones and regions, and an investigation is underway to identify the participants in law violent acts and punish them.
