Wednesday evening proved a tragedy in Rajasthan’s Sirohi district as three children, including two brothers, drowned in the Banas river near Abu Road. Chandu (14), son of Rajuram, Galaram (12), and Kalu (10), sons of Bhanaram, have been identified as the victims. All were the residents of Manpur village.
The children, it seemed, had played a game of cricket near the local airstrip and had gone to the river to swim, police officials said. When she and her mates didn’t come home, their worried families started searching. Around 9:30 pm, the boys’ clothes and a cricket bat were found abandoned on the riverbank after the search.
The trained divers helped launch a rescue operation immediately, after which the authorities were also alerted. Harchand Dewasi, Abu Road Police Station’s Station House Officer (SHO), said that the operation lasted two to three hours before the bodies were found. “The three boys were pulled out from a deep pit in the Banas river.” Dewasi regretted: “Sadly, by the time they were brought to the hospital in the area, doctors said they were dead on arrival.”
On Thursday morning, they were transferred for postmortem and gave them to their grieving families. The victims were known and loved in the Manpur community, and the incident has cast a shadow of sorrow over the place.
Condolences have also been expressed by local authorities and they have urged parents to be vigilant about children venturing into water bodies during recreational activities. The tragedy also further shows that water safety needs to be more recognized in rural areas, which cannot escape such occurrences.
But investigations are continuing and officials ruled out foul play. Now it is concentrating on helping the bereaved families through this difficult time.
