Jaipur: The revised schedule announced by the Election Commission on Wednesday states that the Rajasthan Assembly elections, which were originally planned for November 23, will now take place on November 25. These elections will happen in a single phase and we can expect to know the results by December 3.
The reason behind changing the polling date was “weddings and social engagements” that were scheduled for the polling day. The Election Commission took into consideration representations from parties, social organizations, and media platforms advocating for this change. Concerns raised included inconvenience to a number of people, logistical challenges, and the fear of reduced voter participation during the elections.
Rajasthan consists of 200 Assembly constituencies, and the Rajasthan Assembly’s term will end on January 14, 2024. Presently a Congress-led administration governs the state. In the Assembly polls held on December 7, 2018, there was one phase. The Congress party emerged as the party with 100 seats but fell just one seat short of an absolute majority. On the other hand, the BJP secured 73 seats in comparison to their majority win of 163 seats in the previous elections held in 2013.
Afterwards, the Congress party took charge of the government with the backing of parties, including the Bahujan Samaj Party. Ashok Gehlot, a leader from the Congress, was appointed as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan
