India is one of the few countries that legally cultivate opium poppy for medical and scientific purposes. Rajasthan, along with Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, are permitted zones for this cultivation under strict government regulations. Farmers in these designated areas can obtain licenses to grow poppy, following specific guidelines and quotas.
Opium and its derivatives have been used in Rajasthan for centuries, both medicinally and culturally. A small amount of poppy husk, known as “Doda Post,” is traditionally offered to guests during ceremonies and festivities. However, its misuse as an intoxicant has led to addiction and associated problems in some communities.
