Recent approval from the Union Cabinet to add caste enumeration in the next general census created a significant political conflict between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party throughout Rajasthan. The experts view the recent cabinet decision as a significant moment that could transform India’s social structure and theoretical representation system.

The long-term support for the caste census by Rahul Gandhi has led to the Centre’s current decision, which Ashok Gehlot, a veteran Congress leader from Rajasthan, symbolizes as Chief Minister. Gehlot noted that the BJP, along with its allied organization RSS, previously accused Congress of sowing caste divisions within society. Gehlot declared that his political rivals have given in to such intense pressure. During his time as Rajasthan Chief Minister, he received criticism for failing to carry out a caste survey, although Gandhi had promoted it.

Gehlot stated that the scientific and transparent execution of a caste census needs proper emphasis. “Hasn’t the time exceeded 75 years since Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) feel they are owed their rights? Why do they continue to stay silent?” he enquired. He endorsed Rahul Gandhi’s call to eliminate the 50% restriction on caste reservations before encouraging the Government to outline details about the census process.

The Rajasthan BJP president, Madan Rathore, publicly endorsed the caste census initiative, but he blamed Congress for using this matter for electoral gain. According to him, the political use of this critical national matter is wrong.

A class-based transition within Indian politics is expected by political analyst Narayan Bareth and legal expert Satyendra Raghav to occur following an initial rise in caste awareness through the census.
