On Wednesday afternoon at Sikar district of Rajasthan, a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party was purportedly compelled to drink poison by two unknown individuals, according to the police. The accident was caused when Lalit Panwar, the BJP mandal president of Laxmangarh was taking the tiffin box of his daughter back after dropping them off at school. His car was also vandalised by the accused and he fled.
Mahendra Singh, Panwar was called by an unknown who requested him to go to a plot located close to Hameerpura Road by the Station House Officer (SHO), Laxmangarh Station. As he arrived at the scene, there was no one at first. Singh said that after several minutes, two young men came on a motorcycle and assaulted him.
The attackers claimed they had intimidated Panwar to drink a white liquid off the bottle. They even attempted to force it down his throat. Since swallowing a little of it, Panwar had started to feel ill, and had lost consciousness soon after, the officer added. The locals that were in the area came to his rescue and took him to a local hospital where he was admitted to get treatment.
Later the doctors confirmed that Panwar had been administered Aldrin, which is a poisonous chemical that can be used as a slow poison if consumed in large quantities. By Wednesday evening he was reported to be in a stable condition.
The two men, who are still absconding, have been filed on an attempt-to-murder case with the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Law enforcement officers have initiated search operation and are reviewing CCTV footage of the area in order to establish the culprits.
The incident has caused a rift in the region as the members of the BJP are urging the government to probe into the matter and have those to blame arrested immediately. The government promised to crack down on the suspects after they have been located.
