A sad event happened in Dausa District of Rajasthan where a young boy of 5 years fell into the 150-foot open borewell and died. Although rescuers worked for 57 hours continuously in the well, the child was officially declared dead by doctors in a local hospital on Wednesday night, a police officer added.

The child, a resident of Kalikhad village under Paparda police station, was with his mother, Guddi Devi, today at an agriculture field. One day, the boy was playing, and he fell into the uncovered borewell that had been dug by one of the local companies. “I shouted for assistance and people from the neighboring villages came to the site. They informed my husband and the police,” the mother said.

The rescue operations began immediately but were halted several times because of mechanical problems with the gear. Efforts were made to rescue the child; a team that worked for many days finally dug a tunnel right next to the child. Conveyor oxygen was maintained throughout the operation of the boy involved in the incident. Deepak Sharma, the principal medical officer at Dausa district hospital, said that the child possibly died due to severe injuries, hunger, and the environment in the bore well.

At the same time, Dausa district collector Devendra Kumar said the situation was tragic and complex for the rescuers. “To get to the child it required considerable work and cooperation. That is why we shall make sure that owners of open borewells are advertized or compelled to put covers to avoid such accidents,” he added.

This incident is a sad one and a strong message for people who have borewells and tend to leave them uncovered. The government has assured the public that they are capable of creating even more profound measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future and educating the public on the same issue. The tragedy of losing young people undertones the importance of safety precautions and awareness when working in agriculturally inclined regions. This is a very sad tragedy that all stakeholders in the community will be important to call for an action clause towards protecting children in rural areas.
