Late on Sunday night, over 250 people, including many women and children, were hospitalized elsewhere in Rajasthan after separate mass weddings in Udaipur and Bharatpur induced food poisoning. Over 220 people had to be accommodated at a mass wedding in Dhanmand, which is close to Udaipur. So, MB Hospital in Udaipur had to set up a new emergency ward. A 15-year-old girl is among the sick, in critical condition, most of the remaining patients have been discharged following treatment with around 27 still in the hospital.

Doctors say that after the wedding, guests started to experience the symptoms of food poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. All the hospital staff worked but in vain, hospital staff struggled to manage the situation and an additional team of doctors was called in to handle the influx of patients.

People came from all over Udaipur, as well as nearby districts, for the mass wedding event, which had settled upon a grand bath of celebration for about 6,000 guests. The hospital was overwhelmed by the number of patients, and the situation became very chaotic as many people crowded the facility. In order to keep the crowd under control and to prevent safety risks, a police team was sent to provide services.

One of the victims, Ram Rathore, spoke and said he felt unwell after eating the food, started to vomit, and was dizzy. “I couldn’t stop vomiting, I started feeling nauseous and dizzy shortly after eating,” he said. Sweets and a traditional dish eaten at the wedding event caused a more severe reaction in many of the people who consumed them.

RL Suman, Superintendent of MB Hospital confirmed the hospital received 30 patients first, however within an hour the number rose to 200 patients. However, it was under control. She was admitted to the pediatric ICU for closer monitoring as a critically ill 15-year-old girl.
