The Ministry of Railways has granted ₹8.48 crore to carry out the Final Location Survey (FLS) of the proposed Melli – Dentam railway line in Sikkim, which is a significant development for extending rail connectivity to the southern and western regions of the border state. The sanction was communicated in a letter to the Northeast Frontier Railway on October 24, to expedite groundwork for the long-expected project.

Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba had met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on July 25, advocating for faster progress on the Melli-Dentam project. He stressed the line’s role in improving accessibility via railways, providing a boost for tourism, and helping national security along the border. Completion of the FLS and preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) are expected to facilitate speedy implementation of the project.

In a separate update, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the Dehradun – Tanakpur Weekly Express is now running on three days weekly service. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed the initiative, as a public-friendly measure to strengthen connectivity and promote public tourism between the Garhwal and Kumaon region.
