Karnal: On Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took everyone by surprise and visited the family of a young man from Ghogripur village in Haryana’s Karnal district, Amit Mann. Amit, who had sustained injuries in a truck accident in the United States, was the recent victim of Gandhi’s concern during his foreign tour. The visit was held right before the scheduled Haryana assembly elections on October 5 and when topics concerning the state, including the question of illegal migrants and joblessness in the region, are debated.
Rahul Gandhi came to Karnal at 5 o’clock in the morning and was received by the former AICC secretary and the Congress candidate of Gharaunda, Virender Rathore, on the Delhi Chandigarh highway. Amit had crossed to the U. S. as an illegal immigrant in the hunt for better jobs; he worked as a truck driver. However, he had a rather nasty accident at the workplace, and Rahul, having been alerted to the man’s plight, had earlier promised to take him home to meet his family in India.
While on a visit, Rahul was able to speak to Amit for a few minutes through a video call to give the family a chance to meet him physically. The family was clearly surprised and delighted to see Rahul home, they said thank to him for coming home. Later in the video that was posted by the family, Amit could be seen shaking his head in disbelief at the Congress leader’s visit, to which Rahul said they needed to fulfill their promise of visiting their families.
The experience of Amit and his family regarding migration could be construed as testimony to the overall problem in Haryana, where many families have been compelled to sell out their properties in anticipation of better opportunities in foreign countries. The emotional aspect was proved not only by the focus on people and their relations but also by the problem of socio-economic development of the state faced by young people as the electors; this nationally underlined the need to find political solutions in the upcoming elections.
