Farmer union Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) Haryana will be protesting at the Khatkar toll plaza in Jind district on February 1, letting vehicles pass toll-free, according to a statement on Friday.
This demonstration was scheduled for February 2 came is in response to the arbitrary actions of toll companies, which, despite collecting toll charges, fail to provide proper facilities.
“The toll companies charge hefty fees but do not provide any facilities. The government, instead of safeguarding the public interest, is allowing these companies to exploit people and fill their own pockets,” the statement read.
The SKM has also demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the murder of Mohammad Yusuf, who was falsely accused of cow smuggling and killed by cow vigilantes. The morcha is further protesting the arrests of youths involved in the Khedar Thermal protest and the summons issued to farmers in connection with the Kheri Chopta agitation.
Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced measures for India’s agriculture sector that will benefit 1.75 crore farmers. “Prime Minister Krishi Yojana is developing an Agri Districts Programme. Motivated by the success of the Aspirational Districts Programme, our government, in partnership with states, will launch the Prime Minister Krishi Yojana to enhance agricultural development,” said Sitharaman while delivering her Budget speech today.
The government will undertake the Prime Minister Krishi Yojana in partnership with states through the convergence of existing schemes and specialized measures, said the FM. The program will cover 100 districts with low agricultural productivity, said Sitharaman.
On February 8 and 9, SKM Haryana leaders will submit memorandums to all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, urging them to oppose the new agricultural market policy and push for the resolution of pending issues affecting farmers.
