Election Commissioner Sibin C has designated Indian cricketer Shubman Gill as the ‘State Icon’ for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. Recognizing Gill’s popularity, especially among cricket enthusiasts and the youth, Sibin C anticipates his significant role in achieving a voter turnout of over 70% during the forthcoming elections.

Sibin C emphasized that Shubman Gill will actively contribute to voter awareness campaigns, aiming to surpass the 70% voter turnout target. This move aligns with the government’s initiative to engage popular figures for promoting civic participation. Notably, Punjabi singer Tarsem Jassar was previously appointed as a ‘State Icon.’ Sibin C, in a meeting with all deputy commissioners last Friday, outlined the identification of areas with historically low voter turnout during past elections. He proposed awareness campaigns, leveraging Shubman Gill and Tarsem Jassar’s appeal, to inspire voters to cast their ballots more actively.

Before Shubman Gill, popular Punjabi singer Tarsem Jassar was also appointed as a ‘State Icon’ to lead similar campaigns. Sibin C expressed hope that the inclusion of influencers like Shubman Gill and Tarsem Jassar would motivate first-time voters to exercise their democratic rights actively. He urged people across age groups to participate in large numbers during the upcoming elections. Sibin C anticipated the Lok Sabha elections to take place in April-May.

This strategic move to appoint State Icons reflects the Election Commission’s commitment to increasing voter awareness and turnout, utilizing the influence of well-known personalities in the region. Shubman Gill and Tarsem Jassar are expected to play pivotal roles in encouraging citizens to fulfill their civic responsibilities during the upcoming electoral process.
