Punjab: Due to the release of water from the Ranjit Sagar Dam, the water level of the Ravi River has increased rapidly, exacerbating the situation in Pathankot and Gurdaspur. The effect of heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh is now visible in Punjab as well. 7 districts of Punjab are in the grip of floods. Due to the continuous release of water from Ranjit Sagar and Bhakra Dam, the water level of the Ravi, Sutlej and Beas rivers is increasing rapidly.
In view of the deteriorating situation, schools have been declared closed today in Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Ajnala and Raiya blocks of Amritsar. Schools in 20 flood-affected villages of Fazilka will remain closed till further orders. Flood-like conditions have arisen in Tarn Taran and Ferozepur due to water released from Harike Headworks.
The Pathankot-Jalandhar rail route has been closed due to a landslide under the Chakki railway bridge on the Beas river, affecting 90 trains. Some trains are being diverted via the Pathankot-Amritsar-Jalandhar route.
The water released from Ranjit Sagar Dam is increasing the water level of River Ravi, due to which the situation has become serious in Pathankot and Gurdaspur. Nearly, 7 villages of Makoda Patan in Gurdaspur have lost contact with the district headquarters. The administration has issued special helpline numbers for Gurdaspur.
Dhussi dam broke in Sultanpur Lodhi. Farmers were trying to save the dam for the last 11 hours. In view of the flood-like situation, Shiromani Akali Dal has postponed the rally to be held in Moga on August 31. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain for 9 districts of Punjab today.
Three-storey buildings collapsed simultaneously in Amritsar. These buildings were vacant for a long time, so there was no loss of life or property. The water level in Bhangi Choe in Hoshiarpur has increased. People have been advised not to try to cross it. The bank of the drain broke in Dhanauli, Barnala, due to which water entered the fields and posed a danger to the surrounding villages.
