On Wednesday, Shiromani Akali Dal president, Sukhbir Singh Badal, inaugurated a convoy of 500 Fogging machines, which are meant to protect the flood-affected populations of Punjab against malaria and other water-borne diseases. The equipment will be transferred to the volunteers of Youth Akali Dal (YAD) who are already on the ground in the most affected villages and will organize systematic operations of the fogger to reduce the spread of the disease.
Badal had previously in the day held a conference with the party constituency in-charges and district presidents to work out a minute plan of relief in regard to floods. Visitors examined the massive human destruction of swollen rivers- broken bundhs, submerged farm lands, sinking houses, and the sad loss of cattle and other livestock. They settled on a gradual strategy that gives priority to the most devastated regions, such that no community could be left behind.
The rescue mission has already been a go. It has a fleet of 500 trucks that are transporting maize silage to Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, Amritsar and other affected districts. The party is to distribute wheat among 50,000 poor families in the state within the next few days, which will have a direct impact on hunger relief and the provision of basic food security. Moreover, the certified wheat seed will be supplied to flood-affected farmers with a target of one lakh acres of the farmland being covered to help reclaim the agricultural productivity.
To clear the sand that has proliferated over most fields, the party has also organized the use of tractors and other heavy machinery in batches to the most affected areas. Such machines will hasten the clearing process of the debris, and farmers will be able to get back to farming earlier.
Besides assisting the agricultural community, YAD volunteers will also work with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to organise medical camps. Such camps will support the human health needs, as the parallel veterinary camps will support the livestock that is affected by the floods. Combining food aid, infrastructure reconstruction, disease prevention, and veterinary services, Badal focuses on the fact that the total relief program developed by the Akali Dal is tailored to not only help the residents of Punjab to make it through the economic crisis but also restore the infrastructure so that they are better placed to live in the future.
