Patiala: According to police reports, at around 2 am on Saturday morning, four students from the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala, died in a road accident. The accident happened when a speeding Ford Endeavour hit an SUV passing by. As a result, its sudden impact crushed the tree planted only 50 meters before the university campus on Bhadson Road.
The incident happened at about 2 a.m. when they returned from a dinner party. Reet Kaur Virk (23) was apparently among them, besides Ishan Sood (20), Rishabh Sehgal (21) and Kushagra Yadav (23). Reet was the daughter of retired Major RS Virk from Chandigarh, whereas Ishan was a cousin of Chandigarh BJP leader and former mayor Arun Sood.
It was reported that the driver of the Ford Endeavour possibly skidded to the left lane, apparently after the infamous car hit an Isuzu pickup. He was ferrying two other students with him. Passengers of Ford Endeavour fell dead instantaneously, whereas the Isuzu pickup overturned. At the same time, the two students in the truck had miraculously survived the terrible crash.
Officials from the university in Patiala expressed that four students were in their final year, and the other two were in their third. While the final exam for the graduating students has come to an end on the Friday that just passed, the nature of the tragedy that has befallen us only adds to the tragedy itself.
The Health Minister of Punjab, Dr. Balbir Singh, visited the collision location and implored students to stop the loss of life from excessive consumption of alcohol. “It is evident that excessive speed taken under the influence of alcohol was the cause of the accident; thus,” he emphasized the deterrent nature of the situation.
