The heat of summer increases in Punjab while Electric Units in talwandi Sabo and Ropar instituted power plants leads to a deficiency of 880 MW. The DLF, known for frequent boiler orifice problems at its Talwandi Sabo plant, has again stated that one of 660MWs has technical issues. Technical experts are actively investigating problems and looking to have systems running again in 2 days.
This particular year, it is projected that Punjab is going to require more electricity than what it required in the previous year, and the required electricity is above the 16,300 MW mark but it can be quoted just below fifteen thousand three hundred MW. The shut down of a 660 MW unit in summer season can be considered and further doubts are raised when the cause is linked to the peak paddy season. In order to maintain the demand–supply gap, the PSPCL is coming up with increasing the transmission capacity to 10000 MW, where as, 3000MWs through power banking arrangements also promoting the use of solar power. Though the PSPCL wants all internal power plants operational, it is in light of the internal generation capacity of Punjab at 6600 MW.
The outages of the power plant during the summers for quite many number of days has led the PSPCL authorities to question its management at Talwandi Sabo. The recent outage is synchronous with the flak PSPCL has been attracting for incurring high fixed costs to personal plants during winter seasons when the demand for power is low.
This is a trend because there is additional load on external sources of power, nevertheless, there are no additional capacities in the grid. There is no discussion on the works pertaining to new or supercritical units at Ropar so far.
Punjab has a comparatively large agricultural sector with approximately 14 percent of the households involved in it. 5 lakh tubewells, which still augments the high-power demand continuously, which is anticipated to be above 15000 MW.
