Punjab floods 2025: The floods in Punjab drowned the hard work and dreams of the farmers, but the farmers who have already set an example of community participation through their Kisan Andolan have managed to stay together and fight the tough times. While the floods are the most devastating one in the past four decades, the Punjabi community stayed ‘Chardikalan’ and set an excellent example wherein people do not wait for the government’s response, but rather help each other and fight disasters (whether natural or human-induced)

While the farmers are still curious to know why the government (both central and state) have failed to predict the water levels, they have worked day and night to work in areas where the government failed to reach. The relief material provided by the government did add to their woes rather than helping them.

In such a situation, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that every affected farmer will be given Rs 20,000 per acre as compensation. This is the biggest compensation ever not only in Punjab but in the entire country. Punjab Education and Information & Public Relations Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced that 100% road connectivity, electricity and water supply has been restored in all the flood-affected villages of his Assembly constituency Sri Anandpur Sahib, to provide relief to the people.

Punjab singers and the film fraternity have raised funds and are helping the farmers on the real ground. When PM Modi announced a Rs. 1600 crore package of Punjab relief funds, a Punjabi questioned if it was sufficient. To this, the prime minister responded that he knew Hindi. Why? Will the community with the largest participation in the Indian Army not know Hindi…

How Much Farmers Get Compensation In Floods

The Mann government has taken this step not just on paper but by realizing the pain of the farmers. While farmers in Haryana get a maximum of Rs 15,000 per acre, in Gujarat about Rs 8,900 per acre, in Madhya Pradesh about Rs 12,950 per acre, and in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan mostly Rs 5,000-7,000 per acre, the decision to give Rs 20,000 per acre directly to the farmers of Punjab is like saluting the strength and hard work of the farmers. But the question really is that if it is sufficient? Do they really need these funds??

Mann government has also given Rs 4 lakh assistance to the families of those who lost their lives in the floods and permission to sell the sand deposited in the fields, so that the farmers get immediate cash and the path for the next sowing becomes easier.

This is the fate of farmers in a country that has been independent for 75 years, a trillion-dollar economy. Farmers who own agricultural lands worth crores, spend in lakhs for cultivation, have to wait for the government’s response only to receive pennies as compensation.

On the other hand, BSP accused the Centre and the Punjab government of adopting an irresponsible attitude, due to which Punjab was left to fend for itself. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) state president and former Rajya Sabha MP Avtar Singh Karimpuri who reached Mansa. Karimpuri, who reached Mansa to take stock of the flood-damaged houses, said that the BSP has started a campaign called ‘Punjab Sambhal’, under which the situation of entire Punjab is being assessed and a detailed report is being prepared. He said that Punjab has suffered heavy losses due to the floods. The crops of the farmers were destroyed, people became homeless, but the government has only announced compensation to the farmers and Girdawari of the houses, due to which the farmers are not satisfied.
