The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) said that on Monday, farmers would hold a tractor parade in Delhi on December 6 to seek the attention of the central government for unresolved issues. One of their top requirements is the legal assurance of MSP for crops, which is one of the key concerns of farmers’ organizations.
Strong sentiments about the decision to march arose from farmer leaders in Punjab. The protesting farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 when security forces detained their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march that was led by the SKM and KMM.
Denouncing the Centre’s inaction in front of the media, KMM leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said. ”We have been calm for nine months, and the government has not felt the need to discuss addressing our demands with us. This is where we have been left with no other option but to march towards Delhi,” Pandher added.
Pandher blamed the government for not wanting to solve the problems of farmers by remaining silent on peaceful protests. “From the Shambhu border, we will proceed towards Delhi in phases,” he added, underscoring how the protest march reflects the farmers’ growing restiveness.
Another protester who spoke was Tejveer Singh, from the Bharatiya Kisan Union; he said that they have been supporting at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders for 280 days now, and they have not had a word with them since February 18.
The farmers have further upped their action by declaring a fast unto death from November 26. The fast will be led by the farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal as part of their stepped-up pitch to compel the government into action.
The farmer’s movement is therefore prompted by anger at the loss of promises as the farmers seek to defend their freedom and use legal means to seek justice from the Centre.
