Bhagwant Mann, Chief Minister of Punjab, requested the Akal Takht jathedar on Thursday to allow a live telecasted appearance before the Akal Takht Secretariat after being summonsed by January 15. Mann went to X (formerly Twitter) to point out that he was receiving messages around the world inviting him to have his account of events aired over TV on behalf of the Sikh Sangat. He emphasized that the live broadcast would enable the Sangat to be well-informed of the specifics of his explanation.
See you on January 15 – with evidence attached, Mann wrote in his post, meaning that he was ready to explain all the issues that were mentioned during the proceedings. This is following the call by the acting jathedar of the Akal Takht, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, to call Mann to stand before the Takht Secretariat so that he could answer the accusations that he made anti-Sikh comments.
The summons concerned individual statements of Mann on the subject of the Guru ki Golak and operations relating to the pictures of Sikh Gurus and assassinated militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, which the Akal Takht found to be objectionable. As Gargajj pointed out, the statements made by Mann were based on a planned anti-Sikh mentality and they were against the doctrines of Dasvandh, the religious tradition of giving one tenth of one’s income as directed by the Sikh Gurus. The Sikhs community had been offended by these words greatly and the acting jathedar had made it clear that he had offended the feelings of Sikhs.
According to the Sikh tradition, Mann is treated as a patit, and this fact does not allow him to be shown right before the Akal Takht Sahib. He is therefore called upon to give his explanation before the Akal Takht Secretariat. He seeks transparency by demanding a live broadcast so that he can tell his side of the story to the Sangat to enable the devotees to be seen across the globe.
