Farmers blocked roads at many places across the state on Monday as part of their Punjab bandh call, affecting the commuter traffic in several areas. The bandh call was given in support of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal who has been holding a hunger strike for more than a month seeking the implementation of 13 farm demands. Over 150 trains, including Vande Bharat, were cancelled for Monday and all educational institutes are to remain closed. However, emergency services will remain active across the state. The bandh which commenced at 7 am is expected to go on till 4 pm Monday.
Punjab Bandh: Services Affected
Private and public buses will remain off roads as there will be chakka jams by farmer unions at over 200 spots on highways and link roads. KMM and SKM (non-political) leaders have also stated that they will block railway tracks in 50 locations. Governments offices have no call to stay off duty on Monday. Mandis selling fruits and vegetables are expected to be affected because truckers have extended their support to the bandh.
Dallewal’s health Updates:
Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s fast-unto-death entered its 35th day on Monday, with his health hanging in the balance as he continues to refuse medical treatment. He began the hunger strike as part of a protest by the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) (Non-Political). The Punjab government continues to make efforts to shift Dallewal into a hospital and persuade him into taking medicine to no avail. The Supreme Court issued a strong criticism of the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government and set a deadline for moving Dallewal into a hospital, which ends in two days.
