Chandigarh: Following the assault on Lok Sabha security, Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Sandhwan has expressed grave concerns. Sandhwan has instructed Punjab Police and staff to fortify the assembly’s security measures. The Punjab Assembly is now contemplating digitizing visitor records and affixing photos to their passes.
According to information, until now, legislators were allowed to make passes for two individuals per day during assembly sessions. To do so, a legislator would submit an application stating that the person coming to observe the assembly proceedings was known to them. Subsequently, a pass would be issued, and the person’s entry into the assembly was permitted based on any identification document. The assembly is now considering attaching a photo to these passes, ensuring that the person for whom the pass is made is the same individual gaining entry to the assembly. It is noteworthy that the Punjab Assembly can accommodate up to 100 individuals in the gallery.
Meanwhile, in the wake of the Lok Sabha incident, the issue of the barbed wire wall behind the assembly, facing the neighboring village, has reignited. This is due to several sections of the barbed wire being damaged. The security lapses in the Lok Sabha on the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attack on Parliament were significant. Amid ongoing parliamentary proceedings, two individuals breached the gallery and created chaos inside the Lok Sabha. They also released yellow smoke using a color bomb, creating chaos throughout the chamber.
During this turmoil, the individuals, while jumping on the youth gallery benches, sprayed some substance, resulting in yellow smoke spreading across the chamber. Pandemonium erupted throughout the assembly. The incident highlighted the urgent need to reevaluate and enhance security measures in legislative bodies, prompting the Punjab Assembly to take proactive steps. The challenges faced by parliamentary security underscore the critical importance of securing legislative spaces to prevent unauthorized access and potential threats to lawmakers and proceedings.
