CHANDIGARH: Amritpal Singh Dhillon, the man who allegedly rammed his car into 114-year-old marathon runner Fauja Singh on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway, has been arrested, police said on Wednesday.

Amritpal Singh Dhillon, a thirty-year-old non-resident Indian (NRI), was arrested two days after Singh, popularly known as ‘Turbaned Tornado’, suffered head injuries in a hit-and-run accident while he was crossing the road at his native village near Jalandhar in Punjab. Singh was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Dhillon was going from Bhogpur to Kishahgarh on Monday when he hit 114-year-old Fauja Singh in his native Bias village in Punjab’s Jalandhar district.

Fauja Singh, frequently hailed as having completed marathons in his 100s, leaves a legacy that cannot be aged, nor cultured, nor even put into boundaries, a fantastic example of human stamina and morale.

PM Modi, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, and author Khushwant Singh were first few people to offer condolences as soon as Fauja Singh’s son informed the adjoining police about the mishap, and this brought registration of the FIR. “Policemen have launched an investigation and are now trying to determine the car which has been involved in the incident. The vehicle is yet to be traced; however, we are carrying the leads and will soon make the accused arrested,” the Adampur SHO Harshdeep Singh said.
