Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who was on hunger strike during the farmers’ protest at Punjab-Haryana’s Khanauri border, fell ill on Thursday. The farmer leader has been on hunger strike for 24 days. Today he vomited for about 10 minutes. After this, he fell unconscious. Dallewal’s blood pressure has also gone down. Senior police officers have reached Khanauri border.
The Supreme Court heard the farmers’ protest on Thursday. Expressing concern over the condition of farmer leader Dallewal, the Supreme Court asked the Punjab government to persuade Dallewal to undergo treatment for at least a week and said that others can continue the protest.
A day after the Supreme Court directed it to intervene and offer medical help to Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM non-political) leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the Punjab government is back to adopting a wait-and-watch policy and has assigned the police to hold talks with the agitating farmers.
The Supreme Court asked the Punjab government that a 70-year-old man has been on a hunger strike for 24 days. Who is the doctor who is declaring Dallewal fit without any test?
How can you say that Dallewal is fine? When he has not been examined, blood test has not been done, ECG has not been done, then how can you say that he is fine? On the other hand, a day before, on 18 December, during the hearing of the case, the Supreme Court had instructed the state government that the government should not be lenient towards Dallewal. He is a public leader. The sentiments of the farmers are attached to him. It is the responsibility of the state government to take care of his health.
Let us tell you that farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on hunger strike at Khanauri border since November 26. At the same time, farmers have been camping at Shambhu border and Khanauri border of Punjab-Haryana since February 13 demanding legal guarantee of MSP, loan waiver, pension for farmers and agricultural laborers, no increase in electricity rates and withdrawal of police cases.
Another government functionary said that efforts would continue to be made. “DGP Gaurav Yadav went to meet Dallewal the other day along with the Centre’s representative, Mayank Mishra, Director, Ministry of Home Affairs. When they could not persuade him, do you think he can be persuaded?” The functionary added that the Centre also sent a director-level officer after the Supreme Court’s order. “They could have sent a minister. But this was not done,” he said.
