A portion of the National Highway 3 caved in on Monday in the Kandi district of Punjab after heavy and continuous rainfall. The collapse disrupted traffic seriously in the area indicating the contribution of the current monsoon rains in northern India. Some areas of Punjab, as well as Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, have continuously been under precipitation and there is worry of floods and damage of infrastructural development.

Officials of Punjab Police confirmed that the highway failed under the pressure of continuous raining thus increasing the water levels in the Ujh and Ravi rivers. Some rivulets and minor water bodies in the area have also spilled their banks submerging villages in Pathankot along the India-Pakistan border. Local administration has been quite alert in observing the situation and warning local communities.

Extreme weather prompted the Pathankot district administration to announce a holiday to all educational institutions on August 25. This applies to government and non-governmental schools and colleges and other learning centers. An official order issued by Pathankot deputy commissioner Aditya Uppal stated: keeping in view the continuous rains in Pathankot district, a holiday is declared in all government/non-government schools, colleges and other educational institutions of Pathankot district on August 25.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued warnings concerning heavy rainfall in most facilities in the entire Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir until August 30. Residents have been requested to be careful, keep out of low grounds and be aware of current weather warnings. The administration has positioned relief teams on standby, and they are acting in a manner that will ensure the households of the residents are self-secure and the damage to such core infrastructure is controlled.

The collapse of the highway highlights the increased threats that are brought by the continued monsoon that demand increased preparedness and prompt responses that can help guard against dangers of life and property damages.
