Ludhiana: The Commissionerate Police is on high alert after threats were received to bomb government buildings and police stations in Ludhiana, a major industrial city of Punjab. The threat was received through email and phone, following which security arrangements have been tightened unprecedentedly in the city.
Ludhiana police have deployed additional security personnel outside several police stations and government buildings. Security has been tightened at sensitive places like Jagraon bridge, post office, BSNL Bhawan, DIG Kothi, Circuit House and Ferozepur Road elevated bridge. Jagraon bridge has been secured with barricades and green nets, while security has also been beefed up around the DIG office near Lakkar bridge.
Checking is being carried out by setting up special police checkpoints in various parts of the city. Security has been beefed up at police stations like Salem Tabri, Ladowal, Division No. 6, Sahnewal, Dehlon, Division No. 5, Division No. 3, Jamalpur, Kumkala, Moti Nagar and Meharban as well as highway police stations. According to sources, security agencies have also provided various inputs to the commissionerate police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Parminder Singh Bhandal said there was no threat and it was part of routine checking. However, locals said security arrangements of this level had never been seen before.
This is not the first time that there have been threats of bombing government buildings in Ludhiana. Such threats have been received several times before, after which the security agencies have become more alert. Every activity in the city is being closely monitored so that any potential threat can be prevented.
