Laljit Singh Bhullar, the former Transport and Jails Minister in Punjab has been booked in a suicide abetment case soon after quitting the Aam Aadmi Party government. His name was tainted with an alleged suicide of a district manager of Punjab State Warehousing Corporation in Amritsar, when he was found to have given consent to the investigation.
Police officials have registered an FIR against Bhullar, his father Sukhdev Singh Bhullar and another associate on the charges of abetment of suicide. The case has been lodged in the pertinent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the Ranjit Avenue police station in Amritsar. Officials established that the ruling to register the FIR was made at a late hour in the night after initial investigations.
The former official was found to have been drinking a poisonous drink and before succumbing to death, he pointed out to having taken the extreme measure due to fear that was associated with Bhullar. This statement raised eyebrows against the minister and he resigned earlier on Saturday.
Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, the Amritsar Police Commissioner, said that a probe is being conducted to determine the real situation and so as to confirm the allegations in the case. The officials have promised that they will treat the issue in a way that is just and transparent.
Political reactions to the incident have followed with the opposition parties calling out a comprehensive investigation and responsibility. In the meantime, the government of AAP has not issued an elaborate announcement on the matter other than the resignation of Bhullar.
The case is supposed to go on given that investigators sift through evidence and statements surrounding the tragic incident.
