Ludhiana: A shocking incident of harassment unfolded on a train journey involving a minor traveling with her mother. Regrettably, the misconduct was not committed by just anyone but by a soldier.
This distressing event occurred on a train heading to Amritsar, involving a minor, after which the Railway Police (GRP) took control of a soldier deployed at the Amritsar border. The police registered a case under the POCSO Act against the accused.
The apprehended soldier has been identified as Mahesh Singh, who held the rank of Havaldar. Reportedly, he was intoxicated during the incident and harassed an underage girl traveling from Delhi to Amritsar. The accused and the girl were in the same coach. Disturbed by his actions, the girl informed her mother, who promptly alerted railway authorities.
Authorities took swift action, registering a zero FIR against the accused at the GRP police station in Delhi and subsequently arresting him. After obtaining bail, he was released, and the Ludhiana Police were instructed to file an FIR for further proceedings. However, upon the soldier’s arrival in Ludhiana, he managed to escape.
Inspector Jatinder Singh revealed that Ludhiana GRP informed higher authorities about the incident and sent evidence gathered from the complainant. Almost a month later, when the accused voluntarily arrived at Ludhiana GRP to present his side of the story, he was promptly arrested. After presenting him in court, he was remanded in judicial custody.
The incident underscores the grave issue of harassment on public transport, and the authorities have taken substantial steps to address the matter. It highlights the importance of a collective effort to ensure the safety and security of passengers, especially minors, during train journeys. The legal proceedings against the accused soldier will play a crucial role in delivering justice and establishing the accountability of those responsible for such reprehensible acts.
