The annual kar sewa (voluntary cleaning) of the gold-plated exterior of the Golden Temple (Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib) in Amritsar began on March 6, 2026. Led by Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha (Birmingham, UK) and overseen by the SGPC, this 10-12 day process uses natural materials like lemon and reetha to restore the gold’s shine. 

SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, additional Head Granthi of the Golden Temple Giani Amarjit Singh and head of Nishkam Sewak Jatha, Bhai Mohinder Singh, along with several prominent personalities, were present.

Dhami said that keeping in mind the cleanliness and maintenance of the gold installed at the Golden Temple, its washing is done from time to time, which is annually performed by the volunteers of the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewa Jatha Birmingham. He said that every year the Nishkam Sewak Jatha does this service voluntarily. They will also clean the gold plates covering the domes of Akal Takht, Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai and Ghanta Ghar Deori.

  • Method: The cleaning utilizes a traditional, eco-friendly approach, scrubbing the gold plates with boiled reetha (soapnut) and lemon juice, avoiding any harsh chemicals.
  • Participants: The, sewa is being conducted by volunteers from the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha, Birmingham, under the guidance of Bhai Mohinder Singh.
  • Duration: The process is expected to last 10 to 12 days.
  • Significance: This annual ritual ensures the preservation and maintenance of the sanctity and brilliance of the holy shrine.
  • Officials Present: SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami and Additional Head Granthi Giani Amarjit Singh were present for the opening ceremony.
