Pune: Zika virus is still present in Pune city; two new cases were confirmed on Monday. Out of the two new cases, both are pregnant women from the area that has recently been identified as having a high rate of infection in the city, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the city to six.

The first two cases of the lethal virus were identified in a physician and his teenage offspring with whom the two new patients live in Pune. After the positive test, the health officials carried out checkpoints and took samples of the concerned region. On Saturday, it was positively confirmed a pregnant woman from Erandwane and a 22-year-old young man from Mundhwa were there.

PMC Health Officer Dr. Kalpana Baliwant said that out of the 25 samples taken, 12 belonged to Erandwane samples, where seven of them were pregnant women. Of the aforesaid patients, two women of childbearing age were confirmed to be infected with Zika fever. In the same vein, 13 samples were also taken in Mundhwa, but there were no positive cases of pregnant women. Since pregnant women who are infected with Zika have a higher risk, health authorities are doing anomaly scans among other pregnant women and also surveillance has been enhanced around these regions. The Zika virus has reached Pune, and the government is working to contain the virus and halt the number of cases.

The people living in the mentioned territories are encouraged to protect themselves from mosquitoes and control their health to prevent the Zika virus. The PMC is in close contact with health department officials and other healthcare agencies to monitor and curb the virus’s transmission in Pune. Zika virus is the latest cause for concern; hence, the authorities are advising people to adhere to the proposed measures to avert its spread.

The PMC has stated that they are aware of the scenario and are taking all the safety measures to contain the virus in the city.
