Mother of the 17-year-old boy involved in the fatal Pune Porsche crash, Shivani Agarwal, was released from jail on Saturday after spending more than 10 months in prison. That brought her release only four days after the Supreme Court granted her bail on interim bail. One of the first of the 10 people arrested in the case, Agarwal was arrested for tampering with key evidence to shield her son.
Around noon, she was released from Pune’s Yerawada Central Prison and travelled to a local police station to deal with the legal formalities. Shivani Agarwal is accused of switching her blood sample with her son’s to cover up the fact that her son had drunk at the time of the tragic event. And her actions helped fuel a national outrage that provoked conversation about the role of riches pummeling justice.
On May 19 last year, the two young IT professionals, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, died in the accident. The accident involved the teenager, who was allegedly drunk, crashing his father’s Porsche into their motorcycle.
Besides Shivani Agarwal, some others in custody are the teen’s father, Pune’s Sassoon Hospital doctors Ajay Taware and Shrihari Halnor, hospital staff member Atul Ghatkamble, two middlemen, and three other people.
After her interim bail, a special court in Pune, which is hearing the case, held her to strict conditions: she had to come down with a personal bond of ₹1 lakh with one or two sureties, she had to surrender her passport, seek court permission before leaving India, be on the move and have her mobile tower location active, and come to the Yerawada police station every Wednesday, and refrain from taking any action which could interfere with the ongoing investigation. Additionally, she is forbidden from speaking or agreeing to speak about her identity in public for the next three months.
