Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy presented the territorial assembly of Puducherry on Wednesday to allocate huge funds under the MLA Local Area Development (MLA-LAD) scheme in the budget of 2025-26 fiscal year. The scheme whose annual allocation has been set pegged at ₹ 2 crore is set to be increased to ₹ 3 crore to develop the constituencies.
Besides the hike in monthly financial assistance for heads of the Below Poverty Line families headed by women, the Chief Minister also came as a major relief to the economically weaker sections. Beneficiaries get ₹1,000 per month and from the 2025-26 fiscal year it will rise to ₹2,500 and offer an additional support to the households hit hard due to the rising costs.
Rangasamy also listed the use of advanced technology to map lands among other key initiatives. Drones, with technical support from the Survey of India, will be used to conduct large-scale mapping for ensuring that the Survey and Land Records Department is able to map Puducherry to a scale in conformity with the survey in the State. For this project, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed. Better land record management and dispute resolution will be possible once all the parcels have been assigned a unique identification number.
In order to combat environmental pollution, the government has taken a number of steps, including the phasing out of the use of single-use plastics. Moreover, an Emission and effluent monitoring system will be set up continuously for the large-scale industry of orange category. Marketplaces will also be equipped with cloth bag vending machines to encourage sustainable alternatives.
Further, the Women and Child Development Department old age pension scheme will have ₹500 added to the monthly stipend for all the beneficiaries, ensuring solid financial security for the elderly.
The Puducherry government will provide financial assistance: ₹ 2,000 to those in classes 1 to 5; ₹ 3,000 to those in classes 6 to 10; and ₹ 4,000 to those in classes 11 and 12 if a parent has passed away.
