N. Rangasamy, addressing the Assembly on Monday, informed that the money collected by the Department of Excise is being spent to improve infra facilities and amenities in Assembly segments in Puducherry. The details were presented in response to a question raised by DMK legislator R. Senthil Kumar. Rangasamy pointed out that the money which is being collected from the outlets selling liquor and arrack shops is being used to lay tar roads and provide other basic amenities. He had to make a point to the Assembly that the same tactic is used equitably on all segments without precondition.

In addition, there is the prospect of a government general hospital to be opened soon at the Tirunellak segment of Karaikal in order to fulfil the health requirements of the area “free of cost”. The development of this plan is intended to increase health care services in the area.

Members from all the parties were on the same page to express their worries on the recent flood rains that have elicited a lot of havoc. The Congress MLA M. Vaithianathan expressed shock over this rainfall, which he observed was the worst for the last 35 years on the two dates, namely August 9 and 10. It accused the government of poor preparedness and the absence of appropriate instruments so that they could deal with natural disasters and preserve the properties.

R. B. Ashok Babu, the nominated legislator, highlighted the call to be on the alert to clean up the stormwater drain, given that the northeast monsoon is around the corner. He pressed the government to improve weaponry and readiness for the occurrence of such incidents. Another legislator of AINRC and member of the standing committee on health condemned the poor health situation in the rural areas of the state following incidences of recent rains, which resulted in an increase in dengue and other health complications. He urged the Health Department to expand its activities aimed at dealing with and fighting such health threats.

The session in Puducherry highlighted the absolute necessity for strengthening the prospect of effective results regarding disaster control and enhanced preventive and mitigating health measures to protect the population from disastrous natural occurrences and the subsequent lethal consequences.
