Political unrest and street fights led to the following day after an alleged stone-pelting attack on State Health Minister Veena George over a protest in the Kerala Kannur district on Thursday.
George was supposed to come back to Thiruvananthapuram at Kannur Railway Station at about 3: 20 pm when she was allegedly attacked by activists of the Congress affiliated Kerala Students Union (KSU) who were holding a protest march advertising a black flag at which they were protesting her resignation. In this demonstration, there were claims that stones were thrown and this caused havoc at the scene. The minister was escorted by the Kerala Assembly Speaker A.M. Shamseer but she could not move on with her trip after the incident.
She initially presented herself to Kannur District Hospital complaining of pain in the neck and the hand. She was subsequently transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital in Pariyaram where further examinations would be done and treated because of persistent discomfort. Her officials noted that she was stable.
The ruling party had strong reactions towards the incident. Friday, Party workers held a march in the city of Kannur in protest over what they termed as a violent and unacceptable attack on a sitting minister. This deteriorated as activists of the student group, Students Federation of India(SFI) who are affiliated to the ruling Left marched to the District Congress Committee (DCC) office and purportedly tried to break into the office.
This created fights between the opposing groups and the police had to intervene to curb any further violence. The area has been tightened in security as the authorities strive to restore security in the region against increased political tension.
