The current Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, sworn in with his cabinet, had recently approved a resolution to restore statehood as per insiders of the situation. In its first meeting held on Thursday at the civil secretariat, Abdullah was accompanied by his deputy Surinder Kumar Choudhary and ministers Sakeena Itoo, Javed Ahmad Rana, Javid Ahmad Dar and Satish Sharma.
Speaking at the meeting, which the sources said was the first for the new government, the cabinet agreed on the resolution supporting the restoration of statehood. Nonetheless, up to the moment of writing this, there has been no official public statement from either the National Conference (NC) or the government regarding the details of the resolution, and it will soon be released.
NC chief spokesman Tanvir Sadiq said nothing about the passing of this resolution during the first cabinet meeting. Recently, the Chief Minister of the state, Mr Omar Abdullah, has been talking about the statehood of J & K. On top of that, he was stressing the need for an early solution to this issue.
In his remarks, Abdullah said, “My word of advice to the incoming government would be that the first business of the cabinet should be to pass a resolution asking for statehood to be restored to Jammu and Kashmir.” The Chief Minister should then take that resolution to Delhi and persuade the country’s top leadership to honour their word.
This has been considered a political step in the right direction to restore statehood in the region of Jammu and Kashmir, which was a main focal point for local leadership and the people when the region was stripped of its special status in August 2019. The passage of this resolution could lead to the resumption of dialogue and dialogue with the central government from a new angle.
