It is a huge investment worth over ₹9,200 crore to bolster the healthcare infrastructure in Odisha, and the government has announced the redevelopment of four major medical institutions in the state. Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling was also part of the high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, which took this decision.

A CMO statement said Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla would be revamped at a cost of ₹1,594 crore. When it is finished, the hospital’s bed capacity will increase from the 1,485 it holds in order to add 2,861 patients, nearly doubling the hospital’s bed capacity.

Promising a major overhaul of Rs 1,014.13 crore, the seat for MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur is also being allotted. It will strengthen its bed strength from 1,583 to 2,033 and improve healthcare access in southern Odisha.

The redevelopment of the Government Hospital in Rourkela will raise its bed capacity from 437 to 763 at an amount of ₹ 627.16 crore, and further, it will be able to provide 4433 spare beds.

Though it is not high, about ₹ 5,958 crore has been allotted to be invested in the transformation of Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. When finished, the hospital will increase its beds from 750 to 2,582, becoming the series of largest health facility in the area.

Besides these new initiatives, the Chief Minister also took stock of the progress of the ongoing redevelopment projects of SCB Medical College and Hospital and Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Cancer Institute in Cuttack. Taking the investment of ₹4,474.49 crore, the SCB Medical College is being upgraded, and with its bed capacity to increase from 2,698 to 3,796 by June 2026. In three stages over ₹895.89 crore, the Acharya Harihar Cancer Institute is being redeveloped to increase its bed strength from 612 to 1,127.
