As part of getting ready for the grand Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath on June 27, the Odisha government has formed a ministerial committee to see that the festival goes smoothly. Pravati Parida has been appointed as chairperson of the committee which was created through a notification from the Law Department on Friday.
The panel’s important ministers in Odisha are Law, Works and Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling, Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra and Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena. The Law Department Principal Secretary will be in charge of organizing and guiding the committee.
The main duty of the panel is to monitor, direct and oversee all the government work for the Rath Yatra. The committee will make sure that every arrangement related to roads, parking and crowd control is well prepared before the Puri chariot festival.
Recently, DGP Y B Khurania surveyed the security measures and pointed out that crowd control should be efficient. Since many people will take part in this year’s event, officials in charge have prepared detailed plans and given advice to remain watchful. The procession of big chariots will light up Ratha Yatra on June 27 and earlier, on June 11, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath are ceremonially bathed in an event called ‘Snana Yatra’.
A mobile app named ‘Shree Jagannatha Dham’ has been created by the administration of Puri district to support pilgrims and improve their trip. It shows live info on where you are in the ritual (the current Niti), how long the waiting lines are, what’s happening with Rath Yatra, places of worship, where you can stay and so on. Swain said it is a digital tool to help make the pilgrimage and tour for devotees and tourists easily.
