Odisha Police have created an elaborate blueprint to enhance security in the Rourkela police district following the recent resurgence of Maoist-related activities in the region. It follows days after suspected Maoists conducted three improvised explosive device (IED) blasts on railway tracks located along the Jharkhand and Odisha borders on the weekend, which was confirmed by the officials on Tuesday.

The blasts that took place at two different places in Odisha and Jharkhand destroyed some railway tracks, whereas a blast in the K Nuagaon police station area in Sundargarh district killed one railway employee and injured another. Sundargarh revenue district consists of two police districts, namely Sundargarh and Rourkela, where the security has been recently fortified.

Speaking to the local law enforcement teams, Additional Director General (ADG) of Police Sanjeev Panda, who visited the blast sites, also pointed out that there had been no reported Maoist activities in the city of Rourkela in the last seven years, with the last reported such incidents being in 2018. “Nevertheless, recently in the district, there has been the reemergence of Maoist activities. We have worked out our strategy and have a blueprint in place to counter off this threat effectively,” Panda told reporters.

The fresh approach to security is also commensurate with the goal of the Union Home Ministry to rid itself of Maoism by March 2026. Within this scheme of things, Odisha Police can improve their security infrastructure, set up more security camps, station more units of the Special Operations Group (SOG), and improve their intelligence network to detect the movements of Maoists more closely.

Panda said that Maoist cadres are mostly settled in the Saranda forest of Jharkhand, and they regularly penetrate into Odisha. The new measures will not just seek to neutralize their activities but also make sure that key facilities, including railway lines, are not disturbed, and the population in the area needs to trust that they will be able to regain their confidence in the areas affected by the insurgency.
