A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) got attacked while investigating a blast that occurred at a residence filed to Trinamool Leader in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district. According to the first assessment, it was evident that their vehicle was hit by some bricks thrown in the windshield. The assault occurred at approximately 5:30 AM as locals surrounded the vehicle, hurling stones at it. A top police official quoted that a police NIA officer had sustained injuries while the operation was being conducted.
Before mid-morning, the NIA team had announced the arrest of the people with link to the case and on their way to Kolkata. This is when the interrogation began, as per the report. The institute has forwarded a police complaint about the incident. Almost immediately after, I saw the NIA team arrive with a force from the central police at Bhupatinagar and both teams, along with the detainees, were present at Bhupatinagar.
On December 3, 2022, an explosion, in Bhupatinagar, occurred at a house, killing 3 of its residents. In the preceding month, NIA called before court eight Trinamool Congress leaders asking for their interrogation in privacy about the explosion. The TMC accused BJP of being the brain behind NIA’s raid and it supported it alleging that the opposition party had handed a list of TMC leaders, whose arrest they should be ordered.
This event unfolds shortly after a group of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers were beaten up two months back while conducting a raid on Sheikh’s house which was a residence of another TMC leader from Uttarpara associated with a state food minister Jyoti Priya Mallick who is under arrest now. The raid was related to the multi-crore ration distribution scam in West Bengal. During the raid, central force personnel accompanying the ED team also faced attacks, resulting in the hospitalization of three ED officers.
