The Andhra Pradesh government headed by Chandrababu Naidu has formally dissolved the state Waqf Board formed under the YSR Congress government. The decision corresponds to sixty rising apprehensions regarding the continuous controversy related to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

In an order dated November 30- the state government pointed out that the AP State Waqf Board, constituted by the YSRC government, was a defunct body ever since March 2023. This inactivity had earlier raised some administrative issues, and everyone must act now. Waqf Board, which was dissolved earlier, consisted of 11 members, out of which 3 have been elected and the previous government has nominated the remaining 8.

Prior to that, the Andhra Pradesh High Court ordered a halt to the board’s election of the chairperson on November 1, 2023. The stay order was in answer to a plea that sought to argue the jurisdiction and regularity of the formation of the board. By doing so, this judicial intervention deepened inactivity in the board even further and questioned its authenticity.

The government order also Focuses on The prolonged dysfunction of the Waqf Board & Difficulties due to pending litigation. Speaking to this paper, the chief executive officer of the AP State Waqf Board based in Vijayawada said he had brought these anomalies to the notice of the government. He particularly raised the alarm on some of the legal issues of G.O.Ms No. 47 that have been considered forming controversies. To address this, the state government emphasised that this move is to address all the legal fluctuations that are still persisting and the absence of any administrative void that could jeopardise the course of the affairs of the Waqf Board in Andhra Pradesh.

This development makes it clear why the Naidu government aimed to fix the inefficiencies despite the political and legal tussle regarding the state’s Waqf Board.
