A government survey found that 109 houses were damaged in the recent communal riots in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. A senior official said the report, compiling such information as the number of trees, the kind of species, the age of each tree and the role they play in determining the quality of lives in rural West Bengal, was submitted to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant at the state secretariat, Nabanna, on Wednesday.

Violence that erupted from April 8 to April 12, during protests against the Waqf Act, also involved Dhulian, Shamsherganj and Suti. At least three people were killed, including a father and his son, and more than 274 people were arrested as a result of clashes. Hundreds of residents of Murshidabad fled their homes and took shelter in the adjoining Malda district due to unrest.

Earlier, after the devastation, West Bengal Chief Mamata Banerjee pledged to rebuild all homes affected by the violence under the state’s flagship housing scheme, Banglar Bari. That being said, the government has now got underway with rehabilitation and has entrusted the Additional District Magistrate of Murshidabad responsible for ensuring the resettlement of displaced families and the reconstruction of damaged houses.

The official was asked whether commercial losses would be considered and was informed that a joint survey by the Panchayat Department and the district administration will be conducted soon to assess damage caused to shops as well as other commercial establishments.

The affected area remains a focus of the state government right now to rebuild, to give immediate relief to the displaced families and to restore normalcy in the areas. Security authorities have also raised the ramp-up security measures in sensitive zones and avoid more escalation and conflict. Yet the situation remains tense but under control, as there are continued efforts to help those people affected by the violence.
