Mumbai: The monsoon season started with exceptional rain in Mumbai last May 26, 2025, with the city witnessing its highest rainfall in 107 years. The southwest monsoon showed up in Mumbai on May 25, which was 16 days prior to its original arrival date on June 11, according to the IMD. This makes the city’s monsoon start even earlier than it has since 1950—a record for 75 years.
This year, Southwest Monsoon has arrived in Mumbai today, 26th May, almost two weeks earlier than it usually does. The first early start of monsoonal activity over Mumbai in the period 2001–2025 has been recorded,” the IMD highlighted.
Alongside cooling the city down, the rains caused many areas to become flooded,d which led to traffic jams. According to information from the BMC, areas in South Mumbai were struck by more than 200 mm of rain between midnight and 11 a.m. on Monday.
The amount of rain at the Colaba weather observatory this May—295 mm—was the highest for the month in 104 years. Elsewhere in the city, Santacruz had 55 mm of rain, followed by Bandra with 68.5 mm, Juhu Airport saw 63.5 mm, Chembur had 38.5 mm, Vikhroli had 37.5 mm, Mahalaxmi saw 33.5 mm of rain and Sion tallied 53.5 mm from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Speaking with journalists, Sushma Nair, a scientist from IMD, said the monsoon arrived much earlier than usual over the last 75 years.
It’s remarkable that the monsoon comes early, but this also makes us concerned about how ready communities are for the rainy season. Civic authorities want people to be careful and to steer clear of places that are flooded, as rain is expected again in the next few days.
