High alert has been issued by Mumbai Police after a terror threat alert that said that 34 human bombs with 400 kg of RDX had been planted in vehicles around the city. The caller, who was allegedly an employee with an organisation called Lashkar-e-Jihadi, had threatened that the intended explosion would shake the whole city and result in disastrous casualties. This threat was reported to the traffic police helpline on the eve of Anant Chaturdashi, and the authorities have acted immediately by increasing security in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra state.

As per the threat, the 34 vehicles were all reportedly carrying a human bomb, which can blow up the bombs, causing the deaths of millions of people, and although it is a very big claim, authorities are not ignoring it. Mumbai Police, in turn, have intensified their patrol, bomb detectors and heightened vigilance in sensitive locations, such as busy parks, transit zones and religious places.

And this is not the first terror scare in the city. In August, an email bomb threat was received in the ISKCON Temple in Girgaon, which was subsequently found to be a hoax after a good search was conducted by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS). And so, in July, a threat warning a bombing at the Terminal 2 of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) turned out to be fake following security screening. Most recently, on Monday, a 43-year-old man, Rupesh Madhukar Ranpise, was arrested on charges of making a hoax bomb threat over a bomb at the Kalwa railway station in Thane district.

The government has urged the people to be a great deal alert and report on any suspicious activities and also assist in police inspections. Although it is only being investigated whether the recent terror threat is a reality, the police are emphasising the point that all precautionary measures were taken to avert any untoward incident. This recent spate of threats underscores the need to ensure that there is increased vigilance in Mumbai, one of the most populous and high-profile cities in India.
