The state of Meghalaya is already experiencing a huge shortfall of about 67,500 government jobs, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reported to the state assembly on Tuesday. Underlining the magnitude of the employment problem, Sangma noted that each year approximately 70,000 young people enter working age, but only the state government can offer them 2,000-2,500 jobs a year.

To reduce this widening disparity, the government is undertaking a holistic employment plan that would provide opportunities outside the government sector. The government sector alone has a shortfall of approximately 67500 jobs, hence the reason why we are preparing a holistic plan to address the needs of the 70,000 young people joining the job market annually, the Chief Minister said.

The process of recruitment for 7,000 positions in different government departments is currently being done. Sangma does not deny, though, that filling these posts will not be enough to satisfy demand. The government has also introduced a career counselling programme in 25 areas of interest, like defence services, banking, engineering, among others, as part of a long-term plan. The project shall be governed by the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS), which will have 34 counselling centres in the state. These centres will include trained advisors who will support and direct young aspirants to prepare for different career paths.

Opposition leader Mukul Sangma welcomed the move, but pointed out that there would be a strong requirement for hand-holding support, especially to the candidates seeking a career in the defence. In reply to this, the Chief Minister promised that the programme was specifically geared towards such requirements.

In the future, Sangma remarked that the government has mapped out the employment opportunities under Vision 2030 and found opportunities and investments in several sectors. He estimated that the tourism industry would be able to create approximately 54,000 employment opportunities over the next few years.
