In the district of violence-afflicted West Garo Hills, the Meghalaya Board of School Education has made two Class 12 examination papers late in the district in the wake of unrest caused by nominations to the local council elections. The officials claimed the move was made to make sure that students, teachers and examination staff would be safe in the area where there was a tense situation about the law-and-order.

The board has rescheduled the Music and Anthropology papers of the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examination only on the West Garo Hills district but on March 11 and 12. The tests in all other Meghalaya districts will proceed according to the schedule that was previously announced.

Accreditation and Controller Examinations T R Laloo affirmed that the delayed exams will be held at later dates which will be communicated by the board. According to him, the action was a precautionary measure that was adopted considering the volatile situation in some parts of the district.

The board is also administering examinations to HSSLC in the current year to over 29,000 students. Those in charge emphasized that the fact that the exams were postponed in the affected district was necessary to prevent any danger to the candidates who will come to examination centres during the current unrest.

This situation worsened in West Garo Hills when there were clashes between the tribal and non-tribal populations over nomination process of the local council elections. The carnage prompted the administration to exercise curfew in some of the regions and summon more security forces in an attempt to calm the situation.

According to the officials, the government is vigilantly following up on the situation and will go an extra mile to make sure that examinations can be done safely when conditions are better in the district.
