Mumbai: On Sunday night, a huge fire broke out around 10.30 p.m. in Navi Mumbai Turbhe truck station, destroying at least eight trucks and panicking people as there were a number of explosions at the premises. Luckily, there were no victims.
Officials in the fire department reported the embarrassment at around 11:15 PM. According to fire officer U.B. Akre of the Vashi Fire Station, local firefighting teams were dispatched at the earliest moment they received the alert. He said the fire broke out rapidly since the location had gas cylinders that caused two explosions, thereby increasing the risk.
A whopping eight fire engines, including 6 fire engines of the Vashi fire station and two mechanised fire engines of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) fire brigade, managed to contain the conflagration. The firefighters fought off the flames for many hours and managed to contain the fire by approximately 4 AM on Monday. As of the latest update, cooling operations were being undertaken.
The blaze destroyed eight trucks, some of which were claimed to be loaded with convoys. With the help of fast and timely actions of the fire brigade teams, close to 40 other trucks that were in the terminal were relocated to safe areas to save them, and therefore no additional destruction.
Authorities believe that the rapid transmission of flames could be the result of plastic containers kept at the facility. The real cause of the fire is still to be determined.
This event has brought about questions regarding the security of fire outbreaks in such terminals, especially the areas where gas cylinders and materials that are dangerous to fire are stored. The government will carry out a detailed investigation into the accident and also audit the safety measures that are being practised to prevent such cases in future.
