In a major crackdown on illegal activities, Manipur Police arrested six cadres of a banned outfit in Imphal West district while two individuals were apprehended for extortion-related crimes in Imphal East, officials said Saturday.

The six arrested individuals, according to a senior police officer, were from the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (Ibungo Ngangom) and had been arrested from Koutruk Makha Leikai Church in Imphal West, Friday. This is a big move to flush out insurgent activities in the region.

Two others of the G5 Organisation, however, who were involved in extorting money from the sand-laden trucks passing through various places like Sekmai, Irilbung, Patsoi and Koirengei of Imphal East district were arrested in a separate operation at Achanbigei Maning Leikai in the district. Besides the Sekmai area of Ningthoujam, Yamba Singh (43) and Usham Netaji Singh (35) were also reportedly involved in events of snatching truck keys from drivers past the Sekmai area.

At the same time, Manipur Police said it received people surrendering illegal firearms and ammunition after Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla appealed for their voluntary surrender. Consequently, two firearms and ammunition were sent to the administrations of the Kakching and Kangpokpi districts.

Security forces also recovered 12 firearms from the Kakching Wairi area and handed them over to the Kakching Police Station. The development is part of the continuous effort of law enforcement to bring peace and order back to a conflict-stricken state.

The escalating security moves have been taken by the authorities to further reduce insurgency and criminal activities in the state of Manipur.
