A coordinated shutdown of Manipur occurred on Saturday because various Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups united to commemorate the second anniversary of the May 3, 2023, ethnic conflict. Various parts of northeastern Manipur experienced no public transportation, and private offices, together with educational institutions and markets, all remained closed due to widespread participation in the observance.
Local people commonly call the shutdown “Sintha Leppa,” which they widely support. Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) organized the shutdown throughout the valley districts, and Zomi Students Federation (ZSF) and Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) implemented the shutdown in the hill districts. People will gather at Kangla Nongpok Thong in the evening for a candlelight tribute to remember those lost in the conflict.
The tribe-based violence between Meiteis living in the valley and Kuki-Zo hill communities produced at least 260 deaths along with 1,500 injured people, and drove more than 70,000 residents from their homes during the past two years. Chief Minister N Biren Singh stepped down from power in February 2025 while the state assembly had terms until 2027, which prompted President’s Rule to take effect without any suspension.
The entire state of Manipur entered a heightened security status as officials prepared for the shutdown day. The presence of security forces in essential places served to keep the peace and inhibit any worsening of situations.
